Stop beating yourself up for a "lack of discipline."
Stop buying more planners. Stop downloading new productivity apps. If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels despite your best efforts, I have a truth that might be uncomfortable to hear: The reason you are stuck has absolutely nothing to do with your work ethic.

We live in a culture that worships "the grind." We are told that if we aren’t succeeding, we just aren’t trying hard enough. But what if I told you that trying harder is actually what’s keeping you paralyzed? Most productivity gurus are selling you bandaids for a broken leg. They talk about habits and schedules, but they never go deep enough. To truly understand why you are stagnating, we have to look past the surface and into the hidden architecture of your psyche.
You aren’t broken. You don’t need to be "fixed." You simply need a radical shift in awareness. As the saying goes, you cannot change a problem from the same level of awareness that created it. In this post, we are going to dive into the three hidden reasons you are actually stuck, and why your internal "protectors" might be the very things standing in your way.
Reason #1: The Wound You’re Trying to Outrun
The first and most fundamental reason we get stuck is The Wound. This is a concept that most productivity experts completely ignore because it’s messy and uncomfortable. But the truth is, every single one of us carries a level of trauma. Whether it was a traumatic birth, a childhood experience, or the way society has treated you, you have been wounded.
The area of your life where you feel the most stuck is almost always a direct reflection of that trauma. You think you’re procrastinating on your business because you’re "lazy," but in reality, your psyche is associating that business with a deep-seated fear of rejection or failure that stems from a past wound. Stagnation is often a survival mechanism.
When you feel like something is holding you back, it isn’t a lack of willpower; it’s an ancient part of your brain trying to keep you safe from a pain you haven’t yet processed. You cannot "hustle" your way out of a wound. You have to acknowledge it before you can move past it.
Reason #2: The Secret 'Protectors' Sabotaging Your Success
Because we have these wounds, our psyche develops what I call "parts." You’ve experienced this before. Have you ever said, "A part of me wants to go for a run, but another part of me wants to stay on the couch with a box of cookies"? This isn't just a figure of speech; it is a psychological reality.
The second reason you’re stuck is that you have a Protector Part that has a vested interest in keeping you exactly where you are. Think of it like this:
The Wound: The original pain or trauma.
The Protector: A part of your psyche that developed a strategy to ensure you never feel that pain again.
For example, if you were shamed as a child for speaking up, you might develop a "People Pleaser" part. This part’s entire strategy is to keep you small and quiet so that you are never "wounded" by criticism again. Now, as an adult, when you try to launch a YouTube channel or lead a meeting, that Protector part kicks in and paralyzes you. It isn’t trying to ruin your life; it’s trying to save it. It believes that visibility equals danger.
Until you understand these patterns, you will always be at war with yourself. The goal isn't to kill off these parts, but to know them and develop alternative strategies so they can finally stop standing in your way.
Reason #3: The Internal Civil War (Lack of Dialogue)
The third reason for your stagnation is a lack of dialogue between these internal parts. Imagine your mind is a boardroom. One part of you is a "Rebel" that wants to be visible, successful, and loud. Another part is the "Protector" we just discussed, which wants to keep you safe and hidden.
If these two parts aren't talking, they are fighting. This internal miscommunication creates a massive amount of friction. You set a goal (the Rebel), but you never follow through (the Protector). This isn't a failure of character; it’s a failure of internal harmony. You are essentially driving a car with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. No wonder you aren't moving!
I struggled with this myself for years. It took me 45 years to finally write my book. It wasn't because I didn't have the "work ethic", I'm a hard worker. It was because my internal parts were in a constant stalemate. Only when I walked through these three steps, identifying the wound, recognizing the protector, and facilitating a dialogue, was I finally able to finish what I started.
How to Diagnose Your Own Patterns
If you want to get unstuck, you have to stop looking at your calendar and start looking at your patterns. You need to move from a state of "fixing" to a state of "knowing." Once you understand how your parts express themselves, you can leverage them to your advantage rather than letting them be an obstacle.
To help with this, I’ve developed a tool called the Behavior MRI. Much like an MRI scan in a hospital, this assessment scans your psychological patterns to see what’s really going on under the surface. It’s a unique, audio-based assessment where you answer 15 questions, and the results reveal the specific strategies you can use to make your patterns work for you instead of against you.
Key Takeaways for Getting Unstuck
Abandon the "Fix-It" Mentality: You aren't a broken machine. You are a complex human being with valid reasons for being where you are.
Identify the Wound: Look at the area where you are most stuck. What is the underlying fear or past experience tied to that area?
Acknowledge Your Protectors: Realize that your "bad habits" (like procrastination or people-pleasing) are actually outdated survival strategies.
Foster Internal Dialogue: Start listening to the different "parts" of yourself. What are they afraid of? What do they need to feel safe enough to let you move forward?
Focus on Awareness: Change doesn't come from force; it comes from a higher stage of self-knowledge.
Conclusion: The Journey to Self-Knowledge
Being stuck is a miserable feeling, but it is also a signal. It’s an invitation to go deeper than the "hustle culture" advice that has failed you in the past. Remember: there is nothing to fix. There is only an awareness to be had. When you stop fighting yourself and start understanding yourself, the path forward becomes clear.
This is just the beginning of the journey. In my next post, we’re going to go even deeper into The Wound, how these wounding experiences determine how we walk through life and how we can start to heal them so they no longer dictate our future. It’s time to stop being a victim of your own patterns and start leveraging them for the success you deserve.
